1 Costly 404 Error Page Mistake Responsible For 1,000’s In Lost Traffic. How To Fix This Problem…
By Terrance Charles | February 24, 2008
I didn’t think it was so important. Infact, I didn’t really know too much about it and what kind of impact it could have on your website traffic. I just thought it was a server error which it is, but it’s one that you can correct, and it’s responsible for 1,000’s of lost visitors to my blog. Here’s how I fixed the problem…
First, I noticed that in my statistics area for my blog that I was getting about 5,000 404 error hits to content that was not found or didn’t show up at the time of search. So I payed it no attention for a while because I thought it might just be the browser or something with other computers that was displaying this error.
What Is a 404 Error Page, and Why Should You Use It?…
A 404 error page is page that is brought up when the internet cannot find a particular post on your website or blog, or it’s either missing temporarily and down for that time being. A 404 file not found is when a file cannot be found, either it was deleted or misplaced and its no longer active. Both of these are important, let me give you a example of each:
404 Error Page - You can see the new custom one I am using on my blog everytime this happens. The best thing to do for this is to basically redirect them back to your site by using your full URL or your site navigation on that page because you do not want to use promotions on this. The point is to bring them back not send them away. Click here to see my custom 404 error page…
404 File Not Found - Here’s how this works. Let’s say your website it example.com for instance and someone types in example.com/images … If you do not have that folder on your server it will bring up a 404 file not found and it’s best to either redirect them to your homepage or redirect them to a advertisement after letting them know that the file has been moved etc. Click here for my example 404 file not found Page…
Now that you have a understanding of what they both do, now I’m going to show you how to create one and where you can find templates to use for them, which I did also. There important for driving visitors back to your site and for increasing your revenue from lost pages from website traffic.
