Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past couple years, there’s a cool little tool that will help you connect with other like minded people and provide another way to bring personality to your subscribers, customers, friends, business partners etc – and it’s called Twitter…

How To Power Your Self-Branding Using Twitter?

There are many ways to do this. I can remember when I first started hearing about twitter and when I would check it out, it seemed lame and boring with normal updates and no personality in the tweet’s (tweet’s are 140 character updates)…

But, couple months later, I decided to give it a run, and since then, it’s been one of my most powerful tools for creating self branding and being able to network with other like minded people. It’s a place where you can actually connect with the experts and keep your own little personal profile on what your doing.

If you want to use twitter to power your self branding, there’s couple of rules you have to follow. The first rule is, to never use twitter to spam people, or to follow people in order to just promote your products or service, because they will call you out quick, and your account will be suspended.

You want to add useful tweets (tweets are updates or news about what your doing) and join in on the conversation. Twitter has really picked up on personality and more and more people use it to chat, although it’s only 140 characters at a time. You’d be surprised at who’s on twitter, just about every expert you can name uses it.

Twitter does bring traffic yes, and it can bring you sales, subscribers and signups which it has done for me, but you don’t want to really focus on just that, I think twitter is most powerful for self branding. It’s a way to add personality with your followers and connect with them on a level that one-way email or standard websites can’t.

The correct way to use twitter for self-branding…

Just like a website, you want to be sure that your using your actual picture. Make sure it’s updated, not a picture of you back in high school…lol because that’s what people remember the most. It’s like a first impression, you want them to remember you and having a good quality picture will help your branding.

Second, you want to use your full name. The whole avatar thing is played out now. Nobody is going to remember “marketingguy” or “Imcoach” generic names like these holds no weight on twitter. People remember your full name, for example I use “Terrance Charles” for my twitter username.

Third, you want to make sure that you are participating in two-way conversations and not just posting to get traffic. You will lose followers quick, and actually hurt your reputation. Nobody is going to want to hear what you have to say, and will just ignore you because you’ve already proved to them that you have nothing valuable to add.

Fourth, add some personality will ya ;-) … No one likes boring people, you don’t go to a party to hang out with boring people, so just be you. Look at it like a party, and your the host, you want to make sure that your guest are having a good time right!? So take that same approach into twitter, they want to hang with cool people.

Fifth, it’s no big deal to recommend a website on twitter. The best rule to follow is if it’s something that your followers will like. If it’s useful to them, the more likely they’ll pay attention to your tweets. It’s like building trust, if they know that you give them valuable URL’s in your tweets, they won’t hesitate to check them out, but give them junk and they’ll unfollow you in a heartbeat.

The best rule to use on twitter is to just have fun, give your updates, participate in conversations that interest you, give useful recommendations and just be yourself. You’ll notice a surge in how many people follow you and inturn build credibility and trust, making it easier for you in the long run.
