If you ended up here, you are obviously using Twitter. One of the biggest and best social media sites their is on the internet. But, better yet Twitter is one of the most powerful tools to drive business, brand, and communication, live and direct, no waiting on emails or phone calls, but it’s also a powerhouse for branding your business, unfortunately if you don’t use it right, you’ll brand your business in other ways you don’t want.

5 Ways To Propel Your Brand Correctly On Twitter…

twitter 5 Ways To Propel Your Brand Correctly On Twitter...

#1 – Your Avatar – Don’t mistake this at all. This is one of the most important parts for your twitter branding. Pictures, names, signatures are the best for branding, but on Twitter your avatar is what people see first. You want to make sure that you have a avatar that sticks out, and not blend into the background.

You want your avatar to be clear, to the point and even portray a message, the right message. I see the common mistake of blurry avatars or non related avatars that has nothing to do with the branding of certain profiles, and that’s costing them big time. If your using Twitter for personal branding, use your most professional and eye catchy avatar, that’s what your followers will remember first when they associate you with your tweets.

#2 – Your Name – Another big mistake I see is people using generic names or non branded names that doesn’t have any impact to their marketing. Using names like “affiliate82″ or “workfromhomepro” or “123homebusiness” just for example is doing more harm than it is good. Another big mistake is not using your first and last name, remember you want to brand you, and since your tweets get out their 5 – 10 times a day, you want to keep your name infront of your followers.

For example I use Terrance Charles and that’s how pe0ple remember me. Name recognition is big in internet marketing, and you would not think that not using it correctly could end your career before it’s even started and keep it there. You want to associate your name with you and what you do, if your using Twitter for your company, use your company name too and not a genenric name.

#3 – Your Background – This is just as important as your avatar and name. If you want to boost your personal brand, show off your portfolio by using a professional background that has all your acheivements on it, like your website, phone number if you like, motto or quote and what your known for in the internet marketing industry.

The big mistake I see being made is using generic backgrounds that doesn’t give a first impression brand on who you are and what you do, and with that you fall into the twitosphere as just another profile. The fact is, just having a professional background alone will increase your followers dramatically, they already look at you as a expert and associate it you with quality once they see your background.

I know when I see someone with a nice quality background I associate them with quality and professionalism becaused they cared enough to give their followers and new followers value from the jump, so if they are in my niche, I follow them instantly because I want to see more from them and the kind of value they give.

#4 – Your Content – BIG deal, if not one of the biggest. The first thing you want to concentrate on is VALUE. Their is nothing wrong with sharing your URL every now and then, that’s also the point of Twitter, it’s NOT a popularity contest. The more value you give in your tweets, the more followers you pick up and the more those followers recommend you to their followers, keeping it viral and branding you as the expert in your industry and twitter stream.

Why is it important!? Because in Twitter as you know, getting RT’d (Retweeted) is a big thing, not only does it put you infront of other people that aren’t following you, it’s like a recommendation and the more RT’s you get, the more it helps you. And the more RT’s you give back vica versa. If you want to be RT’d you have to give valuable information from the jump.

Never try to just sell, sell, sell everytime, although Twitter is there to make you money, I found that by not selling and more like telling where the valuable hotspots, links and resources are, I get RT’d more and I make more sales because people go and check out my websites on my profile and let themselves make that decision to by from me or not, because I’ve helped them in some way. Help first, give value, RT, recommend, rinse and repeat and Twitter will grow you and your brand.

#5 – Your Website – You might say, ok what about it!? But, do you notice that mostly when your about to follow someone you skim atleast 3 to 4 tweets to see what they usually tweet about? Then, what do you do next, check out their profile website ;-) and this is big because your website says everything about you. At first, I would have my website go to my products, which is not a bad strategy, but Twitter is about communication and relationships.

Using your blog URL or a free gift URL will get you a higher response. When someone check out your tweets, and go to your website, this is where they can find out all about you. I noticed in my traffic stats from Twitter that after I took off my salespage, I started making more sales from my main blog alone because people was actively checking me out without me pitching at all.

The lesson here, VALUE first, VALUE is the name of the game. There’s nothing wrong with selling, but instead of trying to push that sale, try to push that value and watch that sale handle itself, and not only that, double, triple and quadruple itself when your followers tell their email list, followers or even link to your website without you asking, that’s the point “without you asking.”

Twitter is good for marketing, but if you want to build your brand correctly and you use these 5 criterias above, you’ll be more effective at Twitter and gain more sales, followers, signups, subscribers and big time traffic, Twitter is my #2 referrer and sends me 1,000’s of unique visitors to my websites, and you want to make sure that you are using these 5 guidelines, they are more guidelines, but these are the MUST have if you want to make the best out of Twitter.

Anymore guidelines that you would add? Share your comments, don’t be shy…

You brought up a good point – “Never try to just sell, sell, sell everytime”. In fact, I don’t really like those who doing this.

    Thanks Terrance.

    Excellent Post Terrance!

I totally agree and use the strategy of providing value in your tweets. The more value and quality given the better. And once in a while if you tweet a promo link thats fine too. But only if are doing it infrequently and providing value in your other tweets.

The other important aspect is to connect with others. Participate in conversations, answer and ask questions, make your opinion known, always complement others when you can (never complain or criticize others), etc.

After all Twitter is about being social and making connections. Once you make these connections, add value, get involved with the conversation, tweet promos and ads infrequently etc, then the important thing happens…

    You build trust and credibility

And you basically have broken the ice with potential prospects

Once that ice is broken you’ll see people coming to your site / blog / sales pages / etc. and your conversions will increase!

    Once again great post.

    Talk to you again soon

[Thanks everyone for the comments

@Areak ... Your definitely right about #6. Your bio is everything although it's laid out on your twitter profile, reminding them through your tweets and name is a good way for branding too.]

    Thanks,
