My tip is that Twitter is a community first. Join the community, get to know some people, and then share your resources. If you force what you have to offer on others, your social marketing will not be effective.

Twitter is not only a great place to socialize, but also make money as well. I would recommend using Twollo, which is a Twitter software that connects you with specific individuals and/or businesses who is most likely very interesting in your Tweets.
Where else can you socialize/tweet, meet new friends, connect with potential clients, associate with great businesses, and at the same time make some extra money… TWITTER!

Remember that Twitter is a communication tool to connect with people. Your number of followers doesn’t matter if they don’t care about your content.

Make sure your Tweets are a blend of responding to others, initiating conversations with others, sharing interesting information you don’t profit from, sharing yourself and contributing to the community. After you show that you’re not just out for yourself others will gladly support you.

Twitter streams that only broadcast news about the person or company are ignored. Don’t be that guy or girl. Enjoy the power to connect with tons of great people for personal and professional benefit as well as the pleasure of sharing with your community.

Everyone on here has already stated it pretty clearly, but heck, here’s another nail. lol Be real with people. This has been the most amazing place for me personally to meet people I would have never would have met. And it’s not by selling affiliate marketing or whatever happens to be the “Latest thing by Donald Trump” lol.

It’s about showing class when posting stuff and not blasting others. I personally LOVE quotes, I love to RT the one’s I feel worthy and also share what I’ve learned from others.

There are way too many people just using Twitter as a spam ad board…that’s too ONE way and people can see straight through it.

Unless you’re a major celebrity, you need to be willing to follow most of your followers back. The Twitter limit makes it too difficult for masses of people to follow you if you choose not to follow back. This will seriously limit your ability to leverage Twitter.

I have several links on my blogs that allow readers to follow me on Twitter. Through my blogs, I’ve gained over 3,000 followers each month!

Great idea Terrance.

Practice the law of reciprocity (or, the Golden Rule). If real people are following you, that means at some level they’re giving you a precious gift—their attention. The courteous thing to do is give it back, and then some.

Whatever you do, don’t do the Scoble dump, even if you’re able to spin it to make your dump sound magnanimous. Twitter tools make it easy to pay attention to those who are paying attention to you and to screen out the so-called noise.

As far as the numbers go… I feel that it is far more important to have a deep and narrow niche rather than accumulating 1000′s of faceless followers and spammers.

I go through the list of people who I am following/follow me and weed out those who have nothing to say except advertising ‘follow me’ sites. What is the point of followers if you aren’t saying anything interesting to them!

I look for other people who are talking about keywords relevant to my business (healthy chocolate!) and send them an open reply tweet.

I am also enjoying using Sokule which is a new paying add-on for Twitter.

Don’t be afraid to unfollow.

There is a convention adopted by many on Twitter to build their follower list – follow me/follow you.

This is used by many for different reasons:
#1 They think it’s the done thing and don’t want to offend
#2 They want to create a huge list of followers (to boost their ego)
#3 They want a huge list of followers so they can blast marketing message after marketing message in the hope their shotgun approach will yield results

In reality, having huge numbers of followers coupled with following an equally large number results in a polluted Twitter stream for you and others.

If you find others who are adding no value to your Twitter stream, unfollow them.

Twitter is not just a broadcast mechanism, it’s a community where you can connect with others and a small amount of followers who listen and engage are better than a large amount who do not.

Use a Twitter Client – as great as the standard service is, you will quickly end up in a morass of tweets from those you are following.

The internet is full of noise and if all you’re getting is “noise” or static from your Twitter stream, ask yourself what are you doing online with Twitter in the first place.

To connect or waste time (yours and others)?

Clients like Tweetdeck, Hootsuite and Seesmic among others give you the capability to stay in touch with others particularly if you use the follow me, follow you convention many have adopted.

Here’s an advanced marketing tip for those marketing on Twitter: The mindset between your time on Twitter or other social media sites and your mainstream marketing activities is very different – and it’s the same for your followers there. If you try to send people straight from a social media site to a salepage you’ll hit a disconnect.

Instead, entice them with a free gift (of true value) to move your followers onto your onw opt-in list, or write a pre-sell blog post and send them from Twitter to that post, then from the post to a salespage, easing them from one headspace to the other. Just make sure the pre-sell page is helpful information, not just a salespitch for the product – leave that for the salespage and just discuss the problem the product addresses, why it’s a problem and the benefits of solving that problem – then offer them a link to one possible solution.

Entertain, make people laugh, produce something interesting. And, don’t forget to sell: socializing is fun temporarily, but sooner or later you’ll get tired of it unless your twitter activities also generate a sale here and there.

Additionally, visit your local bookstore, buy a cup of coffee or Chai, and read for an hour in Joel Comm’s book ‘Twitter Power: How to Dominate Your Market One Tweet at a Time.’ Better yet, buy the book!

Oh boy! Well, I have a few LOL…you know I can’t do anything ‘by the rules’!

1. Be personable and relatable. People take interest to personality and being able to relate to you as a human being.

2. Interact. Hello, SOCIAL Media! Don’t just help people you see asking for it in your stream. Use Twitter search to find people looking for help with something you can assist with. Compliment people. Say hi.

3. RT but RT good stuff, not everything that comes through your stream. Search articles and even Tweets to find good things to Tweet (and RT) that are relative to your readers…great stuff that doesn’t belong to you.

4. Be active. A few minutes a day is great and all but the more time you can send a few Tweets, the more visibility you gain and relationships you build. Remember, this IS part of your business – it’s not a waste of time.

…I could go on LOL but I suppose those would be my topS!

Don’t fall for automated systems that promise to get you “hundreds” of Twitter followers. Think quality, not quantity! Spend a few minutes every day finding people who care about the same things you do, and follow them. Then write tweets that share valuable content of some kind. You’ll have lots of followers in no time!

Connect with people and stop marketing!

there are enough spammers on twitter already!

people need to stand out and differentiate themselves by connecting with people and actually helping them out before they try to sell them something!

Connect and build relationships. That would be my best advice.

Be real. Be authentic. Bring something to the table because you will find yourself always taking something away from the “Twitter Table” which you can use in your business.

Find useful and helpful products that might be of interest to others. It’s ok if they are affiliate products, but know what they are, stand behind them and offer insights into what other people are doing and what their products and services entail.

I still use the Twitter main page rather than TweetDeck because I am switching between a few systems and locations and it keeps my flow consistent. I’ve utilized Tweet Later to great advantage and also use BudUrl as a link shortener when promoting products or other websites.

Like the line Clint Eastwood made so famous, “Go ahead and make my day.” Well with Twitter there are wonderful opportunities to make the day for many.

Download and install TweetDeck. Excellent way to sort your followers and interact with them. I don’t even use the Twitter home page anymore. I can use TweetDeck for posting, DM’ing, replying and checking out mine and other followers.
Plus lot more that you can do with it.
